Flying with my Brompton to Sacramento

My bike folded up half way at the gate, waiting to board.

Last week, I took a day trip to Sacramento to testify as the primary witness on a Streets For All bill. I had a 7:30am flight out of Burbank airport, and a 2pm flight back into LAX, which was closer to an event I needed to go to in the afternoon.

I decided to take my Brompton, which I had yet to travel with, so I could have a bike in Sacramento too. I left my house at 5:30am and biked over the Cahuenga Pass to Burbank Airport (took about 45 minutes), and then after the testimony and some lunch, biked back to Sacramento Airport through really beautiful fields and along rivers (took about an hour). Flew to LAX and biked away to an event in West LA (about 35 minutes).

I was nervous about traveling with my Brompton; I didn’t know if I’d have issues at TSA (I didn’t), or fitting it on board (I did), but TSA turned out to be a breeze and Southwest Airlines was amazingly accommodating even when it turned out I was on a 737 with smaller overhead bin space on my way up.

I’m now planning on swapping the handlebar on my bike to a flat one, which I think will solve the sizing issues.

Here’s a video of the experience!
