The Yuba Spicy Curry All Terrain
My family and I love this one spot in Mexico. It’s kind of in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the jungle on the beach, and most of the roads are either dirt or cobblestone. It makes for a pretty postcard, but it’s certainly not that easy to bike on, especially with cargo (ie. kids).
I want to have a bike there that allows me to still live a car free lifestyle, while being able to carry my kids.
My initial instinct was to ship my Load 75 down there, which is, by far, the best bike I’ve ever owned that can carry kids. However, my kids legs are getting longer, so its days are limited. Additionally, it has a footwell, which I was worried might hit some of the rocks or cobblestones.
I love Riese and Muller (they make the best e-bikes in the world) and so I started looking closely at the Multicharger2 Mixte, which would give me the same quality and ride I’m used to on my Load 75, but would be higher up off the ground.
However, the bike only accommodates two kids. For the third, I was thinking of using a Burley trailer (like the D’Lite X) with suspension, but the maximum weight for the trailer is 40 pounds and the max recommended speed is only 15mph. It could also make turns harder, having such a long rig.
I was so excited to discover the Yuba Spicy Curry All Terrain. This is a very unique long tail electric cargo bike for several reasons:
- It’s slightly longer and accommodates 3 kids (or an adult and a kid)!
- It has suspension in the front
- It has all terrain tires and is made for rough roads (I also installed Tannus Armour to make sure I wouldn’t have flats in the middle of nowhere)
- It has the high quality Bosch Performance Line CX motor — amazingly, the same motor in my Load 75. This motor is incredibly capable even under heavy loads. A Class 3 motor (up to 28mph), it supports Torque up to 85nm, meaning you can climb the toughest hills fully loaded.
Yuba has made some amazingly thoughtful accessories for the bike, including:
- Adjustable Monkey Bars (gives them something to hang onto)
- Soft Spot seat pads (comfy to sit on) and a Backrest
- Bamboo Side Boards (they can get on and off easily, and have a place to rest their legs)
- Bread Basket front rack (carry stuff) with the Grab & Go bag that is easy to carry and fits perfectly in it
- A second battery to double the range
- A Pop Top Cover that protects passengers from rain, sun, and wind
There are key differences between the Spicy Curry All Terrain and the Load 75:
- The bike feels more wobbly fully loaded with three kids. This is inherent in any long tail bike compared to a bakfiets (front loaded).
- The chain is noisy and rubs against the frame; they don’t offer a belt option like the Load 75 does, and chains also require more maintenance
- The stock controller is the Kiox, a smaller version of the Nyon I have on the Load. Frankly, given the cost of the bike, I don’t understand why they skimped on this. I might upgrade to the Nyon after the fact, it’s not that expensive and is a lot better, especially for navigation.
If you’re looking for a solid off road solution to carry kids (and yourself), and you have 3 kids or need to carry a lot of cargo, this bike is a great option. I also want to give a big shout out to Around The Cycle, an awesome and super friendly bike shop in Pasadena that patiently dealt with all my questions and ultimately sold me this awesome ride!
